The bottom structure of a display rack affects more than movement. It changes the rack stability, load path, welding process, packing method, user assembly, and long-term appearance near the floor. A buyer may focus only on whether the display rack needs wheels, but Formost usually reviews the full use scenario before recommending a base solution.

Adjustable Leveling Feet

Adjustable leveling feet are usually the lowest-cost bottom solution under the same basic specification. They are also very practical for fixed floor-standing racks because each foot can be raised or lowered to compensate for uneven flooring.

For many retail display fixtures, this is the most stable option. The rack does not roll, the load is transferred directly to the floor, and the buyer can adjust the height during installation. Leveling feet are especially useful for heavier static displays, store fixtures placed against walls, and racks that need to stay aligned with nearby shelving.

The limitation is simple: the rack cannot be moved easily after placement. If store staff need to reposition the display frequently, casters may be more practical.

Plate-Mounted Casters

Plate-mounted casters are usually the strongest wheel solution for floor display racks. The caster is fixed to a flat mounting plate, and Formost normally needs to weld a matching steel plate or reinforced mounting area onto the product base. This spreads the load better than a small threaded stem and gives the caster more stable support.

The trade-off is cost. A plate-mounted caster itself is usually more expensive, and the display rack also needs extra steel plate, welding, drilling or punching, and assembly time. This is why plate-mounted casters are normally the highest-cost option among the three.

Load rating also depends on how the weight is shared. In a four-sided beer island display rack project, that display runs on eight casters — four inner swivel casters carrying the primary load and four corner directional-brake casters for steering and locking. Because a rigid frame on an uneven floor rests on only three contact points, Formost sized the load-bearing casters from a worst case of roughly 167 kg per wheel (about 500 kg total divided across three points) rather than dividing the total load evenly across every wheel, then selected a caster rating above that figure to allow for dynamic loads and a safety margin.

Threaded-Stem Casters

Threaded-stem casters are compact and often easier to install. The caster stem is screwed into a nut, insert, or reinforced tube end. This can reduce the size of the mounting area and make the base look cleaner.

However, the load is concentrated on the threaded stem and the insert area. Compared with plate-mounted casters and leveling feet, threaded-stem casters are usually weaker under the same general product condition. If the rack is heavy, moved frequently, or used on rough floors, the stem may loosen or bend if the structure is not properly reinforced.

Threaded-stem casters are better for lighter or medium-duty retail display racks where compact structure and occasional movement are more important than maximum load capacity.

Why Threaded-Stem Casters Carry Less Load Than Plate Casters

The main difference is the load path. A threaded-stem caster concentrates the force on one threaded stem and the tube end, nut, or insert that holds it. In real store use, the caster is not loaded only in a straight vertical direction. When the display rack is pushed, turned, pulled over a small step, or hit from the side, the wheel also creates side force and an off-center bending moment.

That extra force is transferred directly to the threaded stem and the connection point in the tube. If the stem size, tube wall, insert, or welded nut is not strong enough, the result can be a bent stem, deformed tube hole, loose caster, tilted wheel, or in severe cases, caster failure.

A plate-mounted caster is more stable because the wheel is fixed through a mounting plate connected to sheet metal or the main frame. The load is spread across a larger contact area, several bolts, and the surrounding base structure. This gives plate-mounted casters better vertical load support and better resistance to side impact, especially for heavier display racks, racks that move frequently, or products that may hit thresholds, ramps, or uneven store floors.

Caster Wheel Materials: PP, PVC, and Rubber

Wheel material also matters. PP wheels are usually lower cost and suitable for smooth indoor floors, but they can feel harder and noisier. PVC wheels are softer than PP and can provide a better balance of cost, movement feel, and floor contact. Rubber wheels are usually quieter and more floor-friendly, with better grip, but cost and material grade need to be reviewed.

Caster Hardware Rust Protection Is Often Ignored

Many display rack factories pay attention to the rust protection of the display rack body but ignore the caster hardware. This can become a problem because caster brackets, wheel frames, brake parts, top plates, and threaded stems are close to the floor. They may touch cleaning water, dust, scratches, or high-humidity environments more often than upper display parts.

In our project experience, caster brackets and wheel frames usually arrive electro-galvanized (zinc-plated), not powder-coated, so the zinc coating is relatively thin — typically around 20 microns — while the powder-coated steel frame of a display rack is commonly around 60 microns.

In humid, coastal, or outdoor environments, we have found that standard caster hardware may begin to show corrosion before the powder-coated frame. For this reason, the caster is often one of the first components we review when higher corrosion resistance is required.

Depending on the application, we may specify a heavier zinc coating — up to around 60 microns where the caster design and plating process allow — or use another corrosion-resistant treatment or material.

The 60-micron figure is a practical specification based on our project experience, not a direct equivalence between zinc-plating thickness and powder-coating thickness. Actual corrosion performance also depends on the coating system, pretreatment, passivation, environment, and the required corrosion test.
