KD vs Fully Welded Display Racks: Which Structure Saves More Shipping Cost?

Short answer: For export display rack projects, KD structure usually saves shipping cost by reducing CBM and increasing container loading quantity. However, KD is not always cheaper at the factory cost level. The real decision should compare factory cost, DDP freight per unit, assembly and handling cost, appearance, and stability. At Formost, we plan KD structure to cut CBM and container cost without adding assembly risk on site.

At Formost, we do not choose KD or fully welded structure only by product price. For OEM and ODM metal display rack projects, we compare structure strength, carton size, container loading quantity, buyer-side assembly conditions, assembly and handling cost, retail appearance, and long-term stability before recommending a structure.

What KD Structure Means

KD means knock-down structure. The display rack is not shipped as one fully assembled unit. Instead, it is divided into parts such as frames, shelves, side panels, casters, brackets, screws, connectors, signage holders, or hardware bags.

The main goal of KD design is to reduce shipping volume. A KD display rack can usually be packed flatter, which helps improve container loading quantity and reduce freight per unit.

What Fully Welded Structure Means

A fully welded display rack is welded and assembled at the factory before shipment. The buyer receives a more complete structure, often with less installation work at the destination.

The main advantages are appearance, stability, and installation convenience. A welded metal display rack usually has fewer visible connectors, less assembly risk, and better structural consistency.

Why KD May Cost More at the Factory

A common misunderstanding is that KD structure is always cheaper. In many real projects, the opposite is true.

KD structure may increase factory cost because it requires connectors instead of direct welding, bolts, screws, nuts, brackets, locking parts, reinforced holes, more accurate tolerance control, extra hardware bags, more packaging separation, assembly instructions, and additional QC checks for fitting and assembly.

For a fully welded rack, some connections can be completed directly by welding. For a KD rack, the same connection may need hardware, brackets, threaded holes, stronger packaging, and assembly testing.

Total Landed Cost Formula

To compare KD and fully welded display racks, buyers should not compare factory unit price only. A more realistic formula is:

Total landed cost per unit = factory unit cost + freight per unit + assembly and handling cost + installation risk cost

Freight per unit = total freight cost / loading quantity

This is why carton size and container loading quantity can change the final decision. A KD display rack may cost more to produce, but if the carton size is much smaller and the loading quantity is much higher, the freight cost per unit may drop enough to reduce the total landed cost.

Real Cost Example: KD vs Fully Welded

KD display rack loading plan showing 359 pcs container loading quantity
KD carton layout example: 359 pcs loading quantity.
Fully welded display rack loading plan showing 99 pcs container loading quantity
Fully welded carton layout example: 99 pcs loading quantity.
Cost FactorKD StructureFully Welded Structure
Factory unit costUSD 69.41USD 64.62
Carton size168.5 x 55 x 22 cm164 x 64 x 69 cm
Loading quantity359 pcs99 pcs
DDP freightUSD 6,000USD 6,000
Freight per unitUSD 16.71USD 60.61
Total landed cost before assemblyUSD 86.12USD 125.23

In this case, the KD version is more expensive at the factory level, but the carton volume difference changes the total cost. The KD version can load 359 pcs, while the fully welded version can load only 99 pcs.

So even though the KD product itself is more expensive, the total landed cost before assembly is much lower. The cost gap is about USD 39.11 per unit before assembly and handling cost is added.

Crate proportions can also affect loading quantity without reducing package volume. See our wooden-crate loading case, where a revised layout increased the plan from 32 to 42 sets per 40GP.

Assembly and Handling Cost Can Change the Result

Shipping cost is not the only cost. For KD display racks, buyers also need to consider assembly and handling cost after arrival.

For example, if the estimated U.S. comprehensive labor and handling cost is around USD 45 per hour, and one worker needs one hour to assemble and handle one rack, the KD cost becomes:

USD 86.12 + USD 45 = USD 131.12

In that case, the KD option may become more expensive than the fully welded option at around USD 125.23.

This is only a simplified example. Actual assembly and handling cost depends on local wage level, warehouse operation cost, store labor arrangement, assembly environment, available tools, worker experience, installation location, and whether the rack is assembled in a warehouse or directly inside the retail store.

At Formost, we can help estimate expected assembly time based on the structure, connection method, hardware quantity, and installation steps before recommending KD or fully welded shipping.

When KD Structure Is Better

KD structure is usually better when the shipping volume difference is large enough to offset the higher factory cost and assembly labor.

  • Large display racks with high CBM
  • Export retail display fixtures
  • Multi-store rollout programs
  • Repeat orders with stable assembly process
  • Buyers with local assembly teams
  • High freight periods
  • Products that can be packed flat without damaging appearance

When Fully Welded Structure Is Better

Fully welded structure may be better when appearance, stability, and installation convenience are more important than freight savings.

  • Premium retail display fixtures
  • Heavy-duty load-bearing racks
  • Complex welded metal frames
  • Small or trial orders
  • Projects with expensive local assembly and handling cost
  • Store programs requiring fast setup
  • Displays where visible connectors are not acceptable

When KD May Not Be Worth It

KD structure may not be worth it when the freight saving is small, the rack has many parts, assembly takes too long, local assembly and handling cost is expensive, or visible connectors affect the retail appearance.

Hybrid Structure Is Often the Best Solution

In many OEM and ODM display rack projects, the best structure is not 100% KD or 100% fully welded.

A hybrid display rack structure may be more practical. For example, the main load-bearing frame can be welded for stability, while shelves, casters, signage holders, side panels, header boards, or accessories can be packed separately to reduce CBM.

For many custom metal display racks, hybrid structure gives a better balance between freight savings, assembly time, appearance, and stability.

What Buyers Should Provide Before Choosing

Before deciding between KD and fully welded structure, buyers should provide product size, order quantity, destination country, expected shipping method, loading capacity requirement, store installation conditions, whether local assembly labor is available, target assembly time, whether tools are acceptable, appearance requirements, stability requirements, reference photos, drawings, and packaging limits.

With this information, Formost can estimate carton size, loading quantity, assembly time, and total cost more accurately.

Formost Factory Recommendation

For export display rack projects, Formost usually recommends comparing KD and fully welded structure by total landed cost, not factory unit price alone.

The best decision depends on the full cost chain: factory cost + freight per unit + assembly and handling cost + installation risk + appearance requirement + stability requirement.

As a custom metal display rack manufacturer in China, Formost can help overseas buyers compare KD, fully welded, and hybrid display rack structures before sampling or mass production.

FAQ

Does KD structure always save money?

No. KD structure usually saves shipping cost, but it may increase factory cost and assembly and handling cost. The final cost depends on carton size, loading quantity, freight, and assembly time.

Why can KD display racks cost more to produce?

KD racks often need connectors, screws, brackets, reinforced holes, hardware bags, packaging separation, assembly instructions, and extra fitting checks. These parts can make the product cost higher than a fully welded version.

Is fully welded structure stronger than KD?

In many cases, yes. Fully welded structure usually has better stability and fewer connection points. However, a well-designed KD rack can still be strong enough if the connection method and materials are properly engineered.

How do I compare KD and fully welded cost?

Compare factory unit cost, carton size, loading quantity, freight per unit, assembly and handling cost, appearance, and stability. Do not compare factory price alone.

What if local assembly and handling cost is expensive?

If local assembly and handling cost is expensive, the KD advantage may become smaller. For example, if assembly and handling takes one hour and the comprehensive cost is USD 45 per hour, that cost must be added to the KD landed cost.

Can Formost estimate assembly time?

Yes. Formost can estimate assembly time based on the rack structure, number of parts, hardware quantity, and assembly steps. This helps buyers compare KD and fully welded options more realistically.

Can a display rack be partly KD and partly welded?

Yes. Many export display racks use a hybrid structure. The main frame can be welded for stability, while shelves, casters, signage, or side panels can be packed separately to reduce CBM.

Which structure is better for premium retail displays?

Fully welded or partly welded structures are often better for premium retail displays because they usually look cleaner, feel more stable, and require less installation work in store.

Discuss Your Display Rack Project

Structure choice should not be judged by freight cost alone. For heavy-duty display rack structure, wall thickness, joint design, weld position, base stability, and load path also affect whether KD, fully welded, or hybrid structure is more practical.
