Gridwall is one of the most flexible retail fixtures: hooks, shelves, baskets and sign holders can be moved across an open metal grid. The real difference between a durable panel and a cheap one is in the wire gauge, 25.4 mm pitch, weld quality, frame, base and connectors. 3. How to Specify a Grid That Holds
3.1 Wire Gauge: 3-4 mm Is the Economic Sweet Spot
A grid’s load and rigidity are set first by its wire gauge. In practical retail fixtures, the wire is normally not thinner than 3-4 mm. This range is not simply over-specification; it is often the most economical balance of strength and cost.
Wire cost includes material plus a straightening-and-cutting processing fee. When wire becomes thinner, the material saving gets smaller while the processing fee stays broadly similar. Dropping from 3 mm toward 2 mm can therefore save very little while giving up significant rigidity. Below the 3-4 mm range rarely pays for a load-bearing retail grid.
Factory judgment: do not reduce wire gauge below the practical sweet spot just to save material. The saving may be minor, while panel sag and weld sensitivity increase.
3.2 The 25.4 mm Pitch and Standard Panel Sizes

Common panel sizes run from 2 ft x 4 ft to 2 ft x 8 ft, approximately 610 x 1220 mm to 610 x 2440 mm. Standard pitch and standard sizes usually reduce setup, cost and lead time. Custom dimensions remain possible when the merchandising program genuinely needs them.
3.3 Weld Quality: Hundreds of Intersections
A grid panel is spot-welded at every wire crossing, so one panel may contain hundreds of welds. Under-fused or cold welds can let the grid open, distort or sag under load. Burred welds can also catch hands or merchandise.
